48 Hours in Sofia: A Refined Itinerary

Sofia rewards visitors who move deliberately. Two days is enough to see the city properly, provided you are not spending them looking for parking.

Begin with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Serdica Roman complex preserved beneath the city centre, then walk the yellow-brick boulevard past the National Theatre.

In the afternoon, drive up to Vitosha for the views back across the city — twenty-five minutes from the centre and a different world on arrival.

Day two belongs to Boyana Church and the National History Museum, both on the city's southern edge and both far easier to reach by car than by public transport.

For dinner, Sofia's fine-dining scene now stands comparison with any capital in the region. Book ahead, and let your chauffeur handle the rest of the evening.
